Psalms is God's hymnal, book of poetry and source of inspiration. Who then can read certain passages without being stirred beyond measure?

Unlike most western poetry, with its rhyming verses, Hebrew poetry found in this book depends upon parallelism of ideas, such as seen in Psalm 27:1.

"Wait on the Lord;

Be of Good Courage.

And he shall strengthen your heart;

Wait, I say, on the Lord."

The book provides the fodder for sermons and is the basis of inspirational hymns, songs and spirituals.  Some passages, admittedly, are difficult but in general all are well worth thoughtful study. Many passages, however, are a joy to read.

Consider Psalm 119:11, a passage worth memorizing: "Thy word have I hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Like a shield in olden days and today of body armor, God's word can protect us against evil, temptation, sin and despair.-- but only if we let it.

Psalm 119 is the longest book in the Holy Bible; the shortest is Psalm 117, containing a mere two sentences. About half were written by David. Others were penned by Solomon, Korah, and the sons of Korah, Asaph and even Noah.

The book of Psalms is easy to find, occupying almost the exact center of the Bible. It includes the longest chapter (Ps. 119) and the shortest chapter (Ps. 117). Psalms is also the longest book in the Bible.

Any study of the book would be incomplete without mentioning Psalm 23, which describes the Lord as the shepherd of His people. If we remember nothing else about the Bible, this most certainly should be one that gives us the greatest solace, mixed with joy.

Jesus, as he hung on the cross, quoted these words with little variation, found in Ps. 22:1; Ps.31:5; Matthew 27:46; and Luke 23:46. Together, they read: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Father, into your hands I commit my spirit?"

For a word picture of the crucifixion scene, read the entire chapter of Psalm 31 and you will come away with a clearer picture of the agony that Christ went through for you and for me.
